Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Compiler

Jingeng Sha (coordinator) Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of Shanxi Province in 1979. The naming section is located at Chenjiaban Gully of Ningwu County, Shanxi Province.

Synonym: (天池河组)


Lithology and Thickness

It is composed essentially of purple medium-, and fine-grained sandstones and siltstones, intercalated with a small amount of purple sandy mudstone. It is of 235 m in thickness.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in a conformable contact with the underlying Yungang Fm

Upper contact

The overlying strata missing. Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Fuxian Fm; but in Shanxi-north, the next younger regional unit is the Zhangjiakou Fm volcanics of Valanginian.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed largely in Ningwu, Jingle and Yuanping Counties, and with its scattered distribution being found as well as in the Zhecai and Ruqiu areas of Guxian County. Its lithology is consistent from region to region, being composed mainly of purple sandstones in various regions, intercalated with purple sandy mudstones, with a thickness varying in a range from 200 m to 500 m.
